chaklam ng
吳澤霖

Chaklam Ng is a Hong Kong-based sound artist and musical instrument inventor.

Graduated from the Swinburne University of Technology, as a communication designer. Chaklam is the founder of the sound design collective Oblik Soundwork. He has also been inventing sound instruments for over a decade.

Chaklam realized that the most original music and sounds are created when the tool in hand is working against the player. A singular moment where confrontation turns into organic harmony. Before creating new music, he believes one has to create a new sound instrument. Therefore, his works are often described as the overlapping area of sound, engineering, and creativity.

His recent work “The Interpreter” - a “Language to Music” sound installation, has been exhibited in the new media art exhibition Sensory Transcode, as well as Birkbeck Arts Weeks in London.

When Chaklam is behind the wheel, his works are often created with the community-at-large in mind, and these public installations were featured in major events such as deTour, Sonar & Clockenflap.

Chaklam is currently working on the continuum of his recent sound installation Pause Rec Play, which debuted in detour 2019.

Ancient Art of Wellness and Technology

Futuristic Wellness

“ch”(Concept Harmony) innovate on the ancient healing methods of Singing Bowls. Paired with a mechanical design and data transforming algorithm, that can deliver sound, frequency and composition for humans to heal.

The Machine Sound Healer: WAVE captures environmental data from earth  and translates them into a harmony.

Our art attempts to capture the energy of earth to heal the humans, and the humans can eventually heal the world.

Sound Healing

Sound healing therapy is an ancient practice originating in Tibetan and Himalayan cultures. Metal singing bowls were once used for spiritual and healing ceremonies conducted in Nepal and Tibet.

Scientifically, sounds are made up of vibrations, which affect the world around them. Organisms have their own vibratory rates, and objects have their own resonant frequencies. When an object is admitting vibration and placed next to or touching another object, the other object will begin to vibrate too. These vibrations affect people as well, at even an atomic level.

7 Chakras

Chakras are a spiritual concept of an energy system in our body. Each chakra positioned from the top to bottom of our body. Providing energy to our organs, mind and intellect.

The vibration from singing bowls can produce positive influence to each of the chakras. Tuning the frequency of the chakras through vibrations.

The Machine Sound Healer explores an artistic and technological approach to this spiritual healing concept.

7 Chakras of Earth

Chakras does not only flow through our body but also in the universe. There are 7 locations on earth representing the Chakras of earth.

Part of the concept is to plant a Machine Sound Healer in each of these locations. Capturing the energy presented in these parts of earth.

Mechanical and Digital Design

Mechanical Design

The Machine Sound Healer has an avant-garde design approach. To set the art piece’s timeline in an unknown future. The singing bowls breaks through the barrier of gravity and appears to align in mid air. This is to inspire the audience to think in a new perspective about well-being and sound.

The major components of the art piece includes, 7 singing bowls (in C Scale), arms for structural form of the bowls and motors, arms for mallets and a base compartment for electronics.

The machine healer approach actually brings several breakthrough, compare to a human operated healing experience. A forever on going performance, three or more bowls synchronized activation and pure sound quality with minimum noise.

Sensor Development

To capture the signals from earth, we will be developing a sensor module that can collect geographical data of the location.

That potentially includes the below parameters:

Temperature

Humidity

Air Quality

Wind Speed

Rain

The sensor will then provide the data to our server. Using an original algorithm we will translate that data into MIDI file for the Machine Sound Healer to perform.

Algorithm Development

Input

After the environmental data collection of each chakra on earth. We will reflect on the unique attributes of each location. Then extract those data into commands controlling the Machine Sound Healer.

Output

Each singing bowl has a designated frequency influencing a certain chakra. The unique attribute of the location will activate the according bowl, Certain variables like, wind speed, temperature and humidity will change the performance of the composition.

PHASE 2

Sprout

11/21/2022 — 2023

Launch & Exhibit

The beginning of a movement. We are looking for locations in Hong Kong that represents the energy of the people here. Collecting the elements from the location and performing its unique sounds to the audience. We imagine open exhibition periods for the public to enjoy, and more private sessions for the like minded to submerge.

In this exhibition we will present this futuristic wellness  journey we want to take on. Planting WAVE in different part of the world starting from Hong Kong. With the vision of harvesting the signals of earth and heal the beings on it.

Debuting in Nature Discovery Park, Hong Kong

PHASE 3

Bloom

2023

Adventure & Planting

With the support from people with the same vision. We will  bring this common energy into the grounds of the world.

Starting from Mount Shasta to Mount Kailash. We will plant sensors in each of earth’s chakras harvesting the messages from nature. Each location will also be planted with a Machine Sound Healer reflecting the energy and data in frequency performance.

This also creates a base data collection network that will facilitate our final Phase.

PHASE 4

Reproduce

2024

Production & Ecosystem

In the last phase of this journey, it is a true beginning of a future world. We aim to facilitate any location on earth with Machine Sound Healers. Performing frequency unique to that location and the relationship to the earth’s chakras.

The Machine Sound Healer became a part of earth’s organic technology. Delivering the message of wellness, spirituality, unity, awareness and inspiration. Ultimately heal the people and the people can heal earth.
